The art and science of Arithmancy is an ancient one, and one of the earliest recorded forms of magic. Wizards from such ancient civilizations as the Chinese, Greeks, Egyptians, Babylonians, Incas, and Aztecs recorded their Arithmantic spells on clay and stone tablets, and many of these survive to this day, giving us an important insight into how Arithmancy affected the development of the Wizarding world throughout the centuries and across many cultures.

Lesson One: Determining a person’s age [Aug. 1st, 2006|07:30 pm]

The age of a person is needed for many advanced Arithmantic spells. Many witches and wizards are aware of this fact and, not understanding Arithmancy, are reluctant to give their age for fear that their ignorance will be exploited. (Arithmantic ethics are studied in year two, so we won’t spend any time on the subject here.) This lesson demonstrates a simple spell for determining the age of a person. They will never actually state their age aloud, and they need never know that you have learned it, so it is quite useful.

In this lesson, you will learn to cast a spell that will force all who listen to think of the same number. I should note that it is possible to perform a similar feat with the use of the Imperius curse, but the Arithmantic techniques for doing so are easier. Not to mention far more legal.

This lesson demonstrates a spell that is similar to the previous one, but takes a slightly different path. It uses the Arithmantic technique of digit reversal, which is both simple and powerful.

There is some overlap between different magical subjects, of course, and Arithmancy can often be useful in other subjects studied. If you have taken Ancient Runes above the OWL level, for example, you may have been taught this particular spell for dividing a set of runes between two people in such a way as to ensure that each of them is dealt the predetermined number necessary for a reading. (As you may be aware, some people cheat when using runes in order to manipulate events to their liking. Experts in reading runes have long employed Arithmancy to prevent this from happening.) For safety’s sake, in this lesson we will practice with Everyflavour beans instead of runes.

Number sequences are quite important in Arithmancy as well. A single digit of a particular number sequence is often critical for an Arithmantic spell to work. However, you may not have access to the particular sequence you need, such as a witch’s identification number, or a wizard’s mobile number, as people are understandably suspicious of those who come around asking for credit card numbers and such. However, there are useful spells for determining a chosen number in a sequence without having to be given the sequence at all. This lesson demonstrates one such powerful spell.
